Alternative Rock Dream Come True!

Last night’s concert featuring Third Eye Blind, Yellowcard, and ARIZONA was a thrilling journey through the best of ’90s nostalgia and modern alt-rock. The energy in the venue was palpable from start to finish, creating an unforgettable experience for fans of all ages.

    ARIZONA: Opening Act

ARIZONA kicked off the evening with their signature indie-pop sound, setting a high-energy tone for the night. Their set was a refreshing blend of upbeat tracks and emotional ballads, showcasing their impressive range. Songs like “I Was Wrong” and “Cross My Mind” resonated with the crowd and their infectious enthusiasm quickly won over the audience. Formed by friends Zachary Charles (lead vocals), Nathan Esquite (guitar) and David Labuguen (keys) while attending college in Boston, Arizona released several singles in 2016 and their first album in 2017. After a 4 year hiatus Arizona resurfaced with their self-titled 3rd album in 2023. Their vibrant stage presence and catchy melodies were the perfect warm-up for what was to come.

    Yellowcard: A Nostalgic Dive

Next up, Yellowcard took the stage with the kind of explosive energy that defined their early 2000s heyday. The band’s performance was a nostalgia trip for longtime fans, featuring classic hits like “Ocean Avenue” and “Lights And Sounds.” The violin-driven punk-pop sound that made Yellowcard stand out was as fresh and compelling as ever. The crowd’s enthusiastic sing-alongs and the band’s high-octane performance proved that their music still holds a special place in the hearts of many. Yellowcard was formed in 1997 in Jacksonville, Florida. Ryan at one point during their set told the story about how Kelly, a longtime childhood female friend had, on their they way driving to an Oaisis concert, popped in a Third Eye Blind CD giving him his first exposure to their music and now here he was opening for them in front of over 300,000 people on this tour.

Primarily a pop-punk group, their music is recognized for having a distinct sound in its genre, primarily due to the prominent use of a violin in their songs. Their current lineup consists of Ryan Key (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Sean Mackin (violin, vocals), Ryan Mendez (lead guitar and vocals), Josh Portman (bass, vocals) and touring member Jimmy Brunkvist (drums). Yellowcard’s set was a powerful reminder of their impact on the genre and a highlight of the evening.

Third Eye Blind: The Headliner’s Triumph

Finally, Third Eye Blind took the stage and the atmosphere was electric. With a career spanning over two decades the band delivered a masterful set that balanced fan favorites with newer material. Opening with “Motorcycle Drive By” the crowd was on their feet and instantly engaged, singing along to every word. Their set list was a well-curated mix of hits like “Semi-Charmed Life,” “How’s It Gonna Be,” and “Never Let You Go,” which had the audience swaying and singing throughout. Third Eye Blind which formed in 1993 has continued through the years with many lineup changes, releasing their first album in 1997 the band is currently working on a new studio album.

Lead singer Stephan Jenkins was as charismatic as ever and his interactions with the crowd added a personal touch to the performance. The band’s musicianship was top-notch, with a tight rhythm section and vibrant guitar work that highlighted their enduring skill. The visuals and lighting complemented the music perfectly, enhancing the overall experience. Third Eye Blind's musical style has been described as pop rock, alternative rock and post-grunge. Jenkins has noted that he was influenced by The Clash, Jane's Addiction and Camper Van Beethoven. Third Eye Blind's current lineup consists of Stephan Jenkins (lead vocals, guitar), Brad Hargreaves (drums, percussion), Kryz Reid (guitar), Alex LeCavalier (bass) and Colin Creev (keyboards, guitar).

It was after the song "Losing a Whole Year" that the whole prepared setlist went out the door. With lightning in the distance in the night sky, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, out of an abundance of caution, announced through the band that this night would have to come to an unexpected earlier than anticipated closure. With the threat of severe weather closing in, Stephan announced that they would keep playing and if security had to make them quit mid song that the audience should just keep singing the song to finish the night. Luckly, they were able to squeeze in 5 more songs and with only losing 10 minutes off their scheduled allotment of time everyone made it to the parking lots just in time before the skies opened up and the rain fell.

    Overall Impressions:

The concert was a stellar showcase of three distinct yet complementary acts. Arizona’s fresh sound, Yellowcard’s nostalgic hits and Third Eye Blind’s charismatic headlining set all made for a well-rounded and exhilarating evening. Whether you were there for the throwback vibes or to catch the latest sounds, the night delivered in spades.

For fans of alternative rock this lineup was a dream come true and the collective performance of these three bands was a testament to the enduring appeal of the genre.
