I'm Waking up Dreaming

On Saturday night Shania Twain impressed a sold-out crowd of loyal fans at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in the Woodlands with a hit-filled set lasting more than two hours. Decked out in cowboy boots and hats, thousands of fans filled the venue, seats, and lawn well before Shania took the stage. Country music up and comer and Texas raised Mickey Guyton, primed the crowd with an inspired opening set.

Not to be out done, Shania made an entrance for the ages and at 8:40 p.m. The singer’s team had covertly wheeled out a covered up cart through the aisles to the heart of the pavilion. Shania eventually popped up out of the shrouded cart, much to the audience’s surprise and glee, serenading them with a song from her 2023 Queen of Me album “Waking Up Dreaming.” Wearing dark sunglasses and seemingley sporting a short red wig, which we would later find out was only tucked into her black overcoat, Twain was holding back the much sexier look that she would show the crowd during the rest of the show. Shania sang as her crew moved the cart, which flashed LED lights, from one side of the pavilion to the other giving everyone a chance to see her up close and personal.

Once the song ended all the lights went dark. The stage finally lit back up with the giant backdrop screen showing a video of an animated spaceship bearing the letters “ST” preparing for takeoff amid clouds of real smoke. As the rocketship erupted, Shania emerged from beneath the stage singing “Up!,” sporting a long flowing red wig and dressed in a sexy red fringe dress as well as black hi-toped sneakers with red and white shark tooth soles.

Shania Twain, the ageless and glamorous beauty who at 57 seemingly going on 30, sang the majority of her 18-song set confidently as she fronted a six-piece band that included a guitarist/fiddler and two male backing singers/dancers.

With a giant annimated LCD screen changing the background setting for each song, Twain delivered a hit filled show that rocked, rolled and serenaded the Woodlands sold out crowd with songs that spanned her fabled career. The background scenes varied from Texas themes to an intimate, beach-front setting with waves gently rolling up the sand. The on their feet crowd response for the majority of the show was overwhelmingly ecstatic and feverish throughout the concert, the odds were clearly in Twain’s favor.

There were opulent visuals. There was a theme involving aliens and a saloon that played on the backdrop of the two-tiered stage. At one point in the performance Twain had the stage transformed into a nightclub of sorts, with fans gathered around tables as she waltzed with one of her backing singerd.

For all the glitz and glamor, Shania’s voice and stage presence shone brightest. She climbed on a motorcycle while singing “I’m Gonna Getcha Good,” ran up and down stairs, played acoustic guitar, and nailed choreographed dances with her band, all the while delivering peak vocal performances and at one point even bringing a young girl onstage with her to perform.

At one point during the set a huge Parental Advisory notice filled the background screen in preparation for Twain’s song “Pretty Lier” from her latest release Queen of Me. Shania had no problem projecting the profanity laced lyrics, as she probably had some good reasons in her personal life's relationship history to really mean it.

The veteran performer knew how to get all her fans dancing, ending her set with a stirring rendition of “Rock This Country."

After a short break Shania returned to start her encore performance that started off with “That Don’t Impress Me Much” wearing a black top hat, long black overcoat/cape, knee-hi black boots with full matching gloves and neckband which she announced had been in storage for 25-years. In keeping in sync with the 1999 release “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” Twain pulled off the top-hat and coat revealing the same black mini-dress that she wore in the music video of the same name. It seemed to be a perfect ending to a perfect night.
