The Cult rolled through Houston on their Under The Midnight Sun 2022 tour at the 713 Music Hall on a Friday night. This was the Cult's first visit to the newly opened 713 Music Hall in downtown H-Town. King Woman opened as support set with a simple dark backdrop and lots of blue lighting. San Franscisco Bay Area based vocalist Kristina Esfandiari droned through their set with the melancholic power of doom. The Cult began their set at approximately 9:30 p.m. The band consists of two original members, Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar), as well as John Tempesta (drums), Charlie Jones (bass), and Mike Mangan (keyboards). Opening with their 2001 song Rise Ian emerged with his hair braded into long ponytails wearing a durag pulled down low over his brow and with Billy slinging his natural finish Les Paul Custom. It didn't take long for the Cult to take the audience back to the 80's with the next song being Sun King. Ian apologized and explained along the way that he had recently taken a tumble off a speaker cabinet and sprained his ankle so he wouldn't be jumping around as much as he had wanted. At one point Ian took the time to tell an unruly fan to knock it off and told them to settle down because the floor was fucking general admission and you could get bumped some down there. Billy seemed to be in a groove and only motioned for his set crew to make 2 adjustment to his sound early in the show. After that it was smooth sailing and his guitars belted out the classic Cult sound that we all were there to hear. Most of the set consisted of all their classics, Sweet Soul Sister, Edie (Ciao Baby), Lil' Devil, Wild Flower, Aphrodisiac Jacket, Peace Dog, Fire Woman, Rain, Revolution and She Sells Sanctuary. With the upcoming release of the new album "Under The Midngiht Sun" they included the single "A Cut Inside" which soundeed great live. For the encore they led off with The Witch followed by Love Removal Machine, then both Ian and Billy took turns thanking the Houston crowd for all the years of support that they had received on their many stops over the years in Houston. |
